British Foreign Office has placed 11 more countries to its public advisory list regarding the risks of methanol poisoning from tainted spirits.
The updated warning features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following reports of "a worldwide rise in the number of documented incidents" of industrial alcohol poisoning.
Just a few weeks ago, the government had previously placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing list, following a number of high-profile events including the deadly loss of 6 visitors in Laos in 2024.
Travellers are being warned that as little as small amounts of toxic alcohol can lead to blindness or death within 12 to 48 hours.
Industrial alcohol is a harmful chemical commonly utilized in coolant, car cleaning liquid, and paint solvent. This substance is not intended for drinking.
While it is inherently formed during the manufacture of beverages, reputable manufacturers bring it down to low, safe levels for ingestion through the refining procedure.
However in some countries, it is clandestinely blended into alcoholic drinks to save money, and as it is tasteless and odourless, it is very difficult to detect.
Foreign Office official Hamish Falconer stated that every traveler should recognize the indicators of methanol poisoning.
"When you are having drinks in foreign countries, stick to trusted places and steer clear of homemade alcohol or complimentary drinks," Falconer said.
"If something appears suspicious, like a hangover that's way worse than normal or blurred eyesight – contact a doctor immediately."
The complete list of destinations identified as posing a risk of industrial alcohol toxicity presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
