Substantial Web Disruption Hits Many Sites and Mobile Apps

A large-scale web failure has impacted dozens sites and applications around the world, as users experiencing problems getting online following issues at the cloud computing platform.

The disrupted platforms comprise Snapchat, Roblox, Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, in addition to a host of Amazon-managed operations such as its primary shopping platform and the Ring security home security firm.

Across the United Kingdom, the financial institution Lloyds was disrupted in addition to its branches Halifax and Bank of Scotland, and further notifications of issues accessing the the tax authority online portal on Monday morning. Furthermore across the UK, several Ring users turned to networks to report their security devices were not working.

Solely in the United Kingdom, accounts of issues on individual applications ran into the many thousands for each platform.

The company stated that the issue originated in the Atlantic coast of the America at the cloud division, a division that provides vital internet infrastructure for numerous businesses, who rent out capacity on the company's servers. The cloud platform is the most extensive online services service.

Shortly after midnight (PDT) in the America (8 in the morning BST), Amazon confirmed “increased error rates and latencies” for the cloud services in a zone on the Atlantic seaboard of the United States. The cascading impact seemed to affect platforms around the world, with the problem monitoring service reporting problems with the same sites in various regions.

The monitoring service Thousand Eyes, a service that reports on internet outages, also reported a rise in issues on that morning, and numerous instances found in the Virginia area, the region of Amazon’s US-East-1 region where AWS said the problems originated.
