Rare Crimson Electrical Discharge Photographed in Skies

A team of photography enthusiasts operating in New Zealand have managed to photograph visual evidence of crimson flashes, among the rarest atmospheric displays globally, where bright red bursts become visible in the heavens.

A Memorable Night of Discovery

The photographers began their evening to capture the galactic core over the unique geological structures in the lower part of the country on a night in October, and unexpectedly witnessed the rare phenomenon.

Initially believing they would be blessed to get good weather that night, but their expedition transformed into “an unforgettable one,” an individual involved remarked.

“He was checking his photographs for a Milky Way panorama and realized he had captured red sprites,” the individual explained. “It was unbelievable – there was a whole bunch of screaming and shouting and various reactions in the night.”

Understanding Red Sprites

Red sprites are electrical discharges in the upper atmosphere, caused by thunderstorms. Differing from traditional lightning that strikes downward to the earth, red sprites ascend towards the upper atmosphere, creating shapes that look like vertical forms, root vegetables or even jellyfish. The earliest recorded picture of a such an event was captured – by chance – in that year, by a research unit at the a academic organization.

Fleeting and Ethereal Sightings

These events are extremely short-lived – lasting just a millisecond – that they are rarely visible to the naked eye, but an individual had a lucky break. “By chance, I was gazing straight toward a sprite when it happened – pure chance observing the correct area of the sky and I saw a short crimson illumination,” he explained.

Observing the occurrences was a dream for the photographer, an award-winning dark sky artist. “It appears as if you are observing an unreal vision, it appears mystical … the color is a profound crimson that is present only momentarily, so it is fascinating to observe.”

Technical and Artistic Mastery

Recording a such an event needs a expertise in advanced imaging techniques, as well as an understanding of scientific principles and creative flare, the individual said. “It’s a really involved form of imaging that’s very rewarding as well.”

A different team member said it was among the “most extraordinary nights” of his existence. “I was able to observe the starry river shining above the horizon while these giant scarlet filaments of light swayed above a thunderstorm far on the horizon,” he explained.

A Unique Photographic Achievement

Based on his understanding, there are no further recordings showing red sprites and the night sky of the south in a single image.

“This was a singular occasion when you realize you are seeing a phenomenon you’ll probably never see again.”
