But visiting the cinema required him to spend significantly - a admission at a metropolitan multi-screen cinema priced at five hundred rupees $6, roughly a one-third of his per week pocket money.

"I liked the film, but the rate was a disappointing factor," he said. "Snacks was another 500 rupees, so I skipped it."

Many share his experience. Rising admission and refreshment rates mean film enthusiasts are cutting down on their outings to movie halls and transitioning towards cheaper digital choices.

Data Show a Narrative

In the past five years, figures shows that the typical price of a movie admission in the nation has increased by nearly fifty percent.

The Typical Admission Cost (ATP) in the pandemic year was ₹91, while in currently it increased to 134 rupees, based on consumer study data.

The Multiplex Perspective

One of the main causes why attending cinema has become expensive is because traditional theatres that offered cheaper admissions have now been mostly superseded by luxurious multiplex cinemas that offer a variety of services.

However multiplex operators contend that ticket prices are justified and that patrons still attend in large numbers.

An executive from a prominent cinema network stated that the belief that audiences have ceased attending movie halls is "a widespread idea included without confirmation".

He mentions his group has registered a visitor count of 151 million in the current year, up from 140 million visitors in 2023 and the numbers have been positive for recent months as well.

Benefit for Cost

The official admits getting some responses about elevated admission costs, but says that patrons persist in attend because they get "good return on investment" - provided a movie is quality.

"Audiences exit after three hours enjoying pleased, they've enjoyed themselves in climate-controlled convenience, with premium sound and an immersive environment."

Several networks are implementing flexible pricing and off-peak offers to entice moviegoers - for illustration, entries at certain locations price only ₹92 on specific weekdays.

Restriction Debate

Some Indian regions have, however, also established a limit on ticket rates, sparking a debate on whether this should be a nationwide restriction.

Industry experts believe that while lower prices could bring in more audiences, owners must retain the autonomy to keep their enterprises viable.

Yet, they note that ticket prices must not be so excessive that the general public are made unable to afford. "After all, it's the public who make the stars," one expert says.

Classic Theatre Situation

Meanwhile, experts say that even though single screens present lower-priced admissions, many urban standard audiences no longer select them because they are unable to equal the amenities and amenities of contemporary theatres.

"It's a downward spiral," comments an analyst. "As visitor numbers are limited, theatre proprietors are unable to finance adequate upkeep. And since the cinemas are not properly cared for, moviegoers decline to watch films there."

Throughout the city, only a few of older theatres still stand. The rest have either ceased operations or experienced decline, their ageing structures and old-fashioned facilities a testament of a past time.

Memory vs Reality

Certain visitors, nevertheless, remember single screens as simpler, more collective venues.

"There would be numerous attendees crowded simultaneously," recalls elderly a longtime patron. "Those present would cheer when the celebrity appeared on the screen while sellers sold affordable refreshments and drinks."

However this nostalgia is not felt by everyone.

One visitor, comments after attending both traditional cinemas and contemporary theatres over the past several years, he favors the latter.
